TITAN ATHLETICS OFF TO A GREAT START

TITAN ATHLETICS OFF TO A GREAT START FOR THE
2007-2008 YEAR

As most of you know, Ken Phillips our prior Athletic Director took on new responsibilities this year as the Academic Vice-Principal. (I saw Ken the other day and he was actually wearing a tie. Ken said he had an agreement of only having to wear it three days a week and was working to get that modified.)
Our new Athletic Director is Bryan Sutherland. Bryan comes to the athletic department with a huge amount of experience not only in athletics, but in the Central Valley. He has been at West Salem since the start so he already has much of the battle won. He is a great resource and we look forward to a great working relationship with him.
So on to the teams for the fall season.
FOOTBALL
After dropping a heart breaker to Lake Oswego 28 to 29; the Titans rebounded with a resounding win over Barlow and then followed up with a pounding of perennial power Roseburg from the SOC. The Titans are currently ranked 6th in the State 6 A classification, but are number 1 in West Salem without a doubt.
Comments from Coach Stanley:

“As far as the season goes....

I can't tell you enough how lucky I am to have not only great athletes but great young men to work with.

We have high expectations but realize we need to take it one week at a time.......sounds like a generic head coach doesn't it?”

VOLLEY BALL
On September 8 the ladies opened their season with a first place finish at the Roseburg tournament by defeating the host Roseburg Indians in the finals.
On September 11th they took on the McNary Celtics at McNary. After correcting a line up error in the first game the Titans went on to win the next two games and defeated the Celtics in 3 straight games showing they can overcome some adversity.
September 13 saw the lady Titans put away McKay in 3 games.
The Titan’s faced North Salem at West Salem on the 18th and polished them off in 3 straight games to remain undefeated in the Central Valley Conference.
September 20 at South Salem the Titans defeated the Saxons in three straight games to maintain the first place slot in the Central Valley Conference. Thus far the Titan’s have not lost a single conference game.
The West Salem team is making a run for their 4th straight appearance in the state tournament and hope to better last year’s 5th place finish. They are currently ranked 6th in the State 6 A classification.
Head Coach Susi Armstrong is in her 6th year at the helm of the Titan volley ball team.
Coach Armstrong’s comments follow:
“Titan Volleyball is off to another successful season. Using the motto "Titan Attack", all three teams are competing and representing West Salem High School well.

Varsity, led by seniors Kyley Sexton, Camille Trueblood, Kylie Morin and Alyssa Molina are undefeated in conference play. The team opened their season by winning the Roseburg Volleyball Tournament. They defeated Roseburg in the finals 2-0.

Both the junior varsity and freshmen teams are also undefeated. The freshmen placed second at the Forest Grove tournament.”

GIRL’S SOCCER
The Titans started off the season with a jamboree on August 31.
Next up was Oregon City on September 4. The Titans fell in a very close game 0-1.
The Titans then met David Douglas at David Douglas HS in Portland on September 6 and showed up with a powerful offense and stifling defense defeating the Scots 9-0.
On September 11 they went head to head against McNary at West Salem and defeated the Celtics in a close 2-1 contest.
September 14 saw the Titans facing the Royal Scots of McKay on their home field. At the end of the game neither team would give and ended in a 0-0 tie.
On September 18 the girls soundly defeated the North Salem Vikings 6 to 1. The girls remain undefeated in the Central Valley Conference.
Coach Jaeger’s comments:
“The West Salem girl's soccer team has a new look this year after graduating nine seniors from last year's team. Returning varsity players include senior defenders Britta Berg-Johansen, Mara Schradle, and sophomore defender Janelle Weiss. Senior Courtney Klosterman, and junior all-league player Nicole Marsaglia return to the midfield. Senior Mary Patzel returns to head up the strikers. Also returning is senior goal keeper Kristen Connolly, who will begin the season on the injured list with a broken finger so junior Liz Rodgers will be filling in at goal keeper.

Last year's strong JV team has provided new talent to this year's varsity squad. Senior forward Ali Rae Aguirre started the season strong with three header goals against David Douglas, and was named Statesman Journal player of the week in the first week. Sophomores Libby Baum, Marina Watson, Zoe Smith and Malia Kawamura are all products of the JV program. Exchange student Oda Westli from Norway joins the varsity team, as well as two-year varsity transfer from South Salem, junior Gaby Nevell. Freshman Olympic Development Program player Erika Oliva brings talent and energy to the midfield and completes the Titan roster.

Early season projections have the Titan's finishing 4th in the Central Valley Conference, battling McNary for the final playoff spot. There appears to be more parity in the league this year so look for some surprise results.

The varsity team is coached by second year coach Tom Jaeger, with Megan Moore returning as JV coach and varsity assistant. The JV 2 team is coached by Mariah Jaeger.”

BOY’S SOCCER
On September 4 the boys opened the season with Oregon City at West Salem and led off the year with a win at 3 to 1.
September 11 saw the Titans battling McNary on the Celtics home ground. A very tight contest ended up with the Titans on top 1 to 0 against a very good McNary team.
Next up for the Titans was McKay on the 14th at West Salem. The Titans showed how powerful they are on defense defeating the Royal Scots 3 to 0 and not giving up a single shot the entire contest.
The boys took on North Salem on the 18th and again exhibited the strength they have on both offense and defense by defeating the Vikings 4 to 1 to remain undefeated in the Central Valley Conference and on the year.
Comments from Coach Iverson:
“I am looking for really good things out of my guys this year. We have a really strong group of players on the Varsity team. We have 10 seniors with 5 returning all league players.
The leaders of our team are seniors Nic VonForester, Nic Kilfoil, Mike Kueler, Arial Vega, Zach Chong, and Junior Andrew Baum.
I have an Italian exchange student who is 6”3 that is our starting goalkeeper.
I have a freshman defender named Nic Vrontikos who is starting at right back.
I have brothers on my team who are very technical players, Julio and Marco Cuellar. Marco, a sophomore, is currently our leading scorer and had a hat trick in his first varsity game. He also had the game winner against McNary.
I expect the boys to make a good long run in the playoffs.”

CROSS COUNTRY
Direct from coach Malatesta:
“The Varsity Boys Cross Country Team lead by Sr. Captain Tyler Dudley and co-captains Jon Snyder and Myles Wittman are pressing on toward a district champion repeat if all goes well.

The other varsity team members are JJ Campbell, Guthrie Straw, Trevor Carey, Joseph Campbell, and Seth Bybee.

The team, lead by Jon Snyder, earned a first place finish at the Newport Invitational running against a strong headwind. At the second meet of the season they took a 3rd place trophy home from the South Salem Invite where 24 teams battled it out at Bush Park.

The JV boy’s team were elated to get Kelby Evans, Blake Borsberry, Nathan Scherr, and Alex
Elder who have brought athletic depth to the team. The other team members are Craig
Hopper, Samual Nadarajan, George Berry, Ilya Kleboyo, Steve Tafolla, and Zach Steele.

The Varsity Girls team lead by senior Captain Maren Westby is holding there own. Newcomers Gracie Linn, Rachael Elmer and Emily Meltzer join team members, Alex Walker, Brie Whitehead, Stephanie Finely and Erin Apodaca to round out the team.

Maren finished 3rd at Newport and had a phenomenal 2nd place finish at the Saxon invite gaining a new P.R. of 19:06. The ladies team took a 5th and 6th place finish respectively at Newport and the Saxon invite.

The JV girls doubled in numbers giving us a depth and breadth of athletes. Team members are Emily Litke, Rachael Finley, Amie Apodaca, Karen Wynkoop, Victoria Reis, Kendra Hodges, and Natalie Yonkman.”

WATER POLO
Direct from Coach Evans
“Boys Water Polo:
Their record is now 4-0. Evan Folz is having an amazing year scoring at a pace of 10 goals per game. He might cool off from that pace but he is still on pace to break his own scoring record for the season. Every time he scores he is adding to his career goal record total.
Evan and Mitch McClain are the team captains.
One highlight so far is a big win against Redmond High School in overtime 13-12 on Sept 8th at Walker Pool. In that game Evan scored 10 goals. He followed that up with 14 goals against Woodburn High School.
The team is assured of going to state. They are playing every strong team in Oregon and are looking to improve on their record win total of 16 games last year. The overall goal is to improve on their performance at the state tournament last year by winning in the first round.
Girls Water Polo:
Their record so far is a 3-4-1. Their league record is 3-1. They finished in a tie with Park Rose High School at 8th at the Park Rose High School Varsity Girls Tournament this past weekend.
They had a big win against Redmond High School on Sept 8th at Walker Pool. The score was 7-3.
Captains Jennifer Rodgers and Allison Culver have been team leaders encouraging the team and creating team spirit.
Jennifer and Hayley Steele have been doing really good in the goal cage for the girl’s team stopping several attempts from the other teams.
Each game has seen several leading scorers but most importantly the team has had stellar defense by Breann Kinsey.
Kristin Bronson has shown a lot of speed sprinting for the ball and is an important part of the team by getting the ball to start the offense.
The team has grown over the last five years from 10 to 19 this year. New head Coach Mike Rodgers has done a great job of helping the kids have fun.”

Subject: The Coach
(You don't know anyone like this, do 'ya?)

At one point during a soccer game, the coach called one of his seven - year old soccer players aside and asked, "Do you understand what co-operation is? What a team is?"

The little boy nodded in the affirmative.

"Do you understand that what matters is not whether we win or lose, but how we play together as a team?"

Again the little boy nodded yes.

"So," the coach continued, "I'm sure you know, when a penalty is called, you shouldn't argue, curse, attack the referee, or call him a ****-head. Do you understand all that?"

Again the little boy nodded.

The coach continued, "And when I call you off the field so that another boy gets a chance to play, it's not good sportsmanship to call your Coach a dumb ***, is it?''

Again the little boy nodded…

"Good," said the coach. "Now go over there and explain all that to your mother."
