Bishop soars 6-9 in high jump
West Salem athlete makes up for loss in long jump finals
Jordan Bishop's performance Wednesday in the long jump was less impressive than he expected.
The West Salem High School senior, who has placed third and second in the event at the state meet the past two years, didn't reach the finals of the Titans' dual meet against South Salem.
It was the first time he hadn't made a finals as a high school athlete.
"Well basically, on my first two jumps, they were my PRs, I know they were. I scratched by a couple inches," said Bishop, who has signed to play football at Oregon State.
"On my third jump, I just wanted to make the finals. Turns out I was behind the board, but the jump was short like two inches to get in the finals."
Bishop turned that disappointment into a positive after that, winning the high jump with a height of 6-9, the top Class 6A mark in the event this season and just short of his personal record of 6-101/4. He later won the 200 meters.
"He struggled a little on the board and he refocused nice for the high jump, which that's what we like to see because it's not always going to go great," West Salem coach Erich Herber said.
"He just took that opportunity to improve and he did, going 6-9 in the first meet, really, that he's jumped."
Last year's Central Valley Conference district champion boys squad, West Salem, won the boys half of the meet 107-38, winning 15 of the 17 events.
In the discus, defending 6A state champion Chase Sexton of West Salem improved his state-best mark to 171-7.
"That's my best this year so far," said Sexton, who will sign today to compete in track and field at Boise State today. "I keep on improving."
Sexton, a senior, also won the shot put with a mark of 55-6, just short of the personal record he set last weekend.
Other notable winners for the Titans were Thomas Hoover in the 100 (11.0), Tyler Dudley in the 3,000 (9:22), Michael Keuler in the 110 hurdles (14.9) and 300 hurdles (41.4) and Cory Evans in the triple jump (42-œ).
Last year's district champion in the girls, South Salem, won the meet 87-58.
South Salem senior Rebecca Rhodes sported a sizable bag of ice around her right ankle after the competition.
The three-time state champion who has signed to compete in college at Oregon, still won her customary four events.
Rhodes won the 100 (12.5), the 200 (26.5), the long jump (17-11) and triple jump (34-7). She made just two of her six allotted attempts in the triple jump.
"You have so much adrenaline when you're running against people that I didn't feel it at all," Rhodes said of the ankle problem. "The jumping it affected more because you're pounding on it."
Other notable event winners for South Salem were Katie Sime in the 100 hurdles (16.7), 300 hurdles (50.2) and pole vault (9 feet) and Erica Puopolo in the javelin (112-10).
West Salem senior Kyley Sexton set a season-best of 5-2 in the high jump. She won the event by six inches.
"My first goal today was pretty much to get over 5 foot because I've been stuck on that for my last two meets," said Sexton, who has signed to play volleyball at San Diego State.
"It's exciting to finally get over that, but now I'm ready to go on to get my PR."
Other notable event winners for West Salem included Ariel Beyer in the discus (104-7) and Maren Westby in the 3,000 (10:57).
